The Hidden Winning Wineries Of West Kelowna
May 22, 2019Best Places For Fruit Picking In West Kelowna
July 10, 2019There are plenty of great locations to visit and explore in West Kelowna. One of them you can’t miss is the Gellatly Nut Farm, which is located near some of the newer real estate. So what’s so special about the location? What makes it worth seeing? Learn more below . . .
About the Location
For starters, the nut farm is a heritage site—the orchard has been around for more than 100 years, making it the oldest nut farm in BC. There’s more on-site than just the farm itself; plenty of park space and a playground area makes this a fun place for adults and kids alike. The lakefront also offers some beautiful views and photo-worthy opportunities.
Looking for a great location for seniors? The farm offers fifteen to twenty-minute cart tours of the location for just $2.00, Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Best Place for a Variety of Nuts
Of course it wouldn’t be a nut farm unless there were actual nuts to harvest. Unfortunately, the summer isn’t the season to do so. The best time to get some local Okanagan nuts is from September to November. This is because the farm offers hazelnuts, walnuts, buartnuts, and chestnuts which are only ready for harvesting in the fall. It’s a popular time as well, with around 5000lbs of nuts sold each year.
Wondering where your money is going? The farm is run by a non-profit organization so all the money spent on nuts and tours goes back into The Gellatly Nut Farm Society. They use the funds to maintain and preserve the farm, historic on-site buildings, and park areas so the area always looks exceptional.
Overall, the Gellatly Nut Farm is not a location you’d want to miss visiting. You’ll get the opportunity to see a unique, historic nut orchard, enjoy self-guided walking tours of the site, and learn about the property itself. If you’re interested in checking it out, you can visit the farm from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. until August 31 (when they change to fall hours).
